The Chicago Cubs regained the lead over Milwaukee in their tight
division race by beating the visiting Cincinnati Reds, 3-2, while the
Brewers lost.
Alfonso Soriano was the hero in Chicago on Wednesday, hitting a
leadoff homer in the first and throwing out Norris Hopper at the plate
on Brandon Phillips's single to left in the eighth.
Astros 5, Brewers 4 Hunter Pence singled home the winning run off
Matt Wise in the bottom of the 10th after Milwaukee had forced extra
innings when Rickie Weeks hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth.
Mets 8, Nationals 4 Visiting New York ended a five-game losing
streak. The game was tied heading to the fifth, when Jose Reyes singled
with one out, Luis Castillo tripled him home and David Wright singled
to make it 4-2. The Mets did not trail again,
Padres 5, Pirates 3 Scott Hairston hit a three-run homer with two
outs in the bottom of the ninth as San Diego rallied past Pittsburgh to
increase its NL wild-card lead. The Padres won their sixth in a row. Hairston launched an 0-1 pitch from Matt Capps over the left-field
wall. Hairston, who hit a game-ending homer in the 10th inning against
San Francisco on Aug. 3, had been just 5-for-30 with two outs and
runners in scoring position this season.
Cardinals 2, Phillies 1 Philadelphia couldn't make it two
extra-inning victories in a row in St. Louis. Yadier Molina singled
home the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning, and St. Louis
stopped Philadelphia's six-game winning streak. The Phillies had had a
tense 7-4 victory in 14 innings Tuesday.
Diamondbacks 6, Giants 4 Arizona overcame Doug Davis's poor start to
keep on playoffs track. Chris Snyder had three hits and three RBI
against visiting San Francisco, Mark Reynolds added three hits and two
RBI, and Conor Jackson homered.
Yankees 2, Orioles 1 Andy Pettitte earned his 200th victory as New
York edged visiting Baltimore to complete a three-game sweep. Mariano
Rivera escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth for the Yankees, who
closed in on Boston in their division race. New York has won 12 of 14.
Blue Jays 6, Red Sox 1 Russ Adams hit a grand slam in the eighth
inning off Jonathan Papelbon as Toronto swept a three-game series from
visiting Boston.
